[/i] That was so much easier to say yesterday, turns out. Truth be told there as a good fifty, maybe sixty percent of Kenji’s psyche that had hoped and prayed that when he had awoken this morning after yesterday’s…nightmare that it would have been revealed to be just that: a nightmare. Nobody was dead, they weren’t thrust into this killing game, and everything would be sunshine and rainbows and the sixteen students would be safe and happy and on their way to attend Hope’s Peak. Sadly, after waking up and passing by the door to the room that once would have housed Teruru, the photo used of the heroine to show the room’s occupant now grey and devoid of all color and spending more time than he’d like to admit knocking on her door, secretly hoping it was obvious that while they definitely were in a nightmare, this was far from a dream for the fifteen that remained alive for the moment. So, here he was doing a whole lotta nothing except trying to ignore the small rumblings in his stomach that were already starting to grow. The toy bear, true to his(its?) word had removed any and every trace of food on the ship and if what had been said was true, this would stay barren until someone actually broke down and killed one of their fellow shipmates. What a deplorable little bastard of a bear that Monokuma was. Not wanting to spent all day feeling sorry for himself in his room however, Kenji had plopped down in his own little corner of the deck with a pile of blank papers and, doing what any rational person would do in this situation: folding them into paper airplanes and throwing them all over the ship. "Please please Mister Airplane, if you can reach Chiaki for me.He didn't really think his airplane would reach his sister, all the way from WhereverTheFuckWeAre, but it was an old tradition of the Takabe kids. Whenever Kenji would get upset, or discouraged or whatever else, his older sister Chiaki would tell him to fold it into an airplane and send it to the heavens, and let the wind carry away your worries. Life was too short to let yourself get weighed down by worries and depressions. Giving the paper airplane he had just finished putting together a mighty toss, as if to summarize their fortune to be stuck here on this ship, the airplane glided through the air for maybe two seconds and then took a sudden nosedive and crashed right back down to the deck of the ship. "...Well, shit."Penelope Baron[/ul]

Penelope was... confused. This whole thing confused her. Nothing confused her more then what gummykuma just told them. She and the rest of her gingerbread classmates had just awoken on a chocolate ship in the chocolate milk ocean. A gummy bear named gummykuma appeared and shot a gumdrop straight at the shsl heroine! It was a tragedy. She was known across candyland for her heroism, like the time where she saved those sour patch kids. and now her cookie had crumbled. That tasteless bear now was saying that they had to eat each other to escape! She could never do that... could she? She slowly reached up and pulled off some of the bubblegum hair from the shsl hershey reject. As she chewed she blew a bubble. It grew bigger and bigger. It grew so big that she started floating. She floated so high that she fit the force field powered by pop rocks and was electrocuted. Penelope was jolted awake by her nightmare... except her nightmare was real. Well, in the most part it was real. Now her dreams are making her even more hungry. There was nothing they could do about it though. They had searched the entire ship yesterday and did not find a way off or a way to alert authorities of their capture. They would just have to try and survive for now. letting out a sigh Penelope got off the bed in her new room and went to get changed out of her hello kitty pj's. Once she was dressed she left her room, making sure to lock it after her. While she did trust her fellow classmates, its better to be safe than sorry right? As she passed the others bedrooms on her way to the deck, she gave a nod towards teruru's would be room. They would find a way out of here, then they could mourn. Once she made it on deck Penelope noticed she wasn't the first awake. No surprise, She preferred night to day. She walked over to where the shsl skateboarder was sitting. She put her back against the wooden wall and slid down, putting her hands on her laid out legs. "looks like fun, mind if I join?" Kenji Takabe

[/i] You would think that after being trapped on a ship with fifteen fourteen other people and told that the only way for one of them to get off the ship or even just to eat would be to commit a murder and then fool the other twelve shipmates so they could escape alive, all alone. So you would think, as many of the shipmates had done this early morning that the safest course of action would be to keep to yourselves. No matter what someone might say, nobody could really blindly trust the person next to them in these scenarios, they had to be wary for the knives aimed at the small of their backs. "Do whatever you want, dude."...Kenji's naivety really was something to be admired. While some people may be up this early morning, hidden away in their rooms feeling sorry for themselves and fearing the actions of their neighbors, the ultimate skateboarder instead was cheerfully sitting out in the open playing with paper airplanes and didn’t even think twice to opening up his circle to the tattoo artist (whose name he may or may not actually remember, good work kenji) Smiling cheerfully at the purple haired girl before going back to throwing his paper airplane straight up into the air, seeing how high he could get it to fly before it nosedived right back to the deck, bending over to pick it up the skateboarder pauses, head cocked to the side as if he were a dog as something strikes him for the first time "Oh, but if you're just here to kill me or whatever, least do me a favor and tell me first, yeah? There are some things I wanna say to people before I croak."...That wasn't really a normal reaction people should have, Kenji Penelope Baron---- I'm embarrassed on how bad of a response this is, he just wasn't cooperating for some reason. damn skater bro[/ul]

Once Penelope was given permission she reached over and grabbed a piece of paper. Man its been awhile since she had done this. Last time she tried she almost poked her sisters eye out. Scared her enough not to become the shsl paper airplane maker. Tattoo artist has a better ring to it anyway. "Don't worry, I would rather die than to take someone else's life. Besides, this would be a horrible time and place to commit a murder, there is no way I could not get caught" She giggled. "just kidding with that last part." "I heard the way to get good distance with these things is to make it heavier at the nose. Never been able to make a decent one though." She started to fold the paper in half. Then she reversed the fold. A few minutes later she had finished her airplane. Penelope stood up, trying to get whatever height help she could, and sent it flying. It curved upwards during its flight before landing lightly back on the deck. As she started on the next airplane she began to think about her fellow classmate. He seemed pretty chill, considering the situation. If this had gone according to plan they might have been friends at Hopes Peak instead of fellow captives. No... they could still be friends. It would be harder, but it could still happen. "So..." Penelope started, thinking of something to say, "Skateboarding huh? Never tried that before. What's it like?" Kenji Takabe

[/i] Oh. Well....good? That was all settled then. You’d have to be a special type of naïve to just blindly take someone’s word at face value if they came up to you when you were sitting alone in an isolated area where nobody could come to their rescue if that person was lying and they decided that they really really wanted to eat. Luckily (or unluckily, depending on who you ask) Kenji really *was* that naive, so once she assured him she wasn’t there to kill him yet he just went back to flapping the wings of his paper airplane like it was a bird. Seventeen year old, the height of maturity right here folks. "Besides, this would be a horrible time and place to commit a murder, there is no way I could not get caught""There is that."In spite of himself the skateboarder can't help but grin as the tattoo artist chuckled at her own little joke and began folding a paper airplane of her own, Kenji couldn’t help but keep an eye on the purple haired girl out of the corner of his just in case it wasn’t really a joke. As she made "My sister used to be the best at making these things. She tried ta pass the tricks off down ta me, but like anything else I wasn't bright enough ta get a handle on it, I suppose."As if to demonstrate the point he was trying to make here, the skateboarder threw his newest plane with all of hs might which resulted in it flying up, curving left and smacking right into one of the sails. "So...Skateboarding huh? Never tried that before. What's it like?"Suspicion gone. His expression brightened up right away, the blonde boy beamed with absolute joy at the topic the girl had brought up in an attempt to make idle conversation in between folding paper airplanes, the blonde boy rubbed his chin thoughtfully trying to think of a way he could explain the joys of skateboarding to someone who's never stepped onto a board before "T'only way I can really describe it to ya is that it's very...freeing, yanno?"Kenji nodded to himself, deep in thought as if he had just said the deepest, zennest thing ever spoken before and continued on, making it clear there was more to that statement than was implied. "When I step on to a board, it's like I'm Icarus, flying across tha skies on his wings before he flew to close to the sun. O-or, like I'm floating amongst the stars just one with the universe. There's no expectations I'm not living up to, nobody I'm lettin down. There's me, and only me."Wow, that was kinda depressing. Snapping himself back to reality, the skaterhead beaming honestly at the purple haired tatto artist as if there were no hidden meaning behind his words at all. "It's the best feelin in the world."Penelope Baron[/ul]

Penelope smiled at the reaction she got from the skateboarder. One of her favorite things to do was to make others happy. He has a face that could light up the room, it was hard not to feel happy, it was contagious. To feel free... it was something she wished she could feel right now. She nodded eagerly, wanting him to continue. As he continued she got more and more enraptured by his description of the sport. It seemed like he entered some sort of meditative state when he talked. The way Kenji described it made it seem completely normal for such an active activity to bring a feeling of oneness. Penelope closed her eyes, she could feel herself flying through the clouds, not a care in the world. No worrying about her family, or having to kill someone to get off, or even her empty stomach. It had been awhile since she just focused on herself. Once Kenji stopped talking Penelope opened her eyes, looking down at the forgotten paper airplane in her hands. She slowly feel her mind coming back to earth. Penelope went back to work on her paper airplane, "That... sounds amazing. Do you think you could teach me, after this is all over?" Kenji Takabe

[/i] "Huh?"Sorry, he wasn't at all sure that he had heard what she had just correctly. She actually wanted him to teach her something? That couldn’t be what she really said, could it? Nobody ever just up and asks the person at the top to teach them, they’re always just gunning to knock you off the perch so they can take your position as their own. It was simply the nature of the competitive spirit, you know. If you were going to go into a field where there can only be one number one than you don’t really want to learn from the guy on top, its closer to a feeling that you want to see him knocked off the big pedestal, so this was a new experience for him. "Well...I mean, I don't mind, but nobody's ever really asked me to teach them before."It was an odd feeling, and it was a feeling that Kenji found made him all warm on the insides. Just that somebody would ask a good for nothing like him to teach them anything on any subject, even if its just a dumb skateboarding lesson given to a classmate if and when they survived this ordeal, it was a great feeling, and the blonde teen can't help but smile at the warm feeling in the center of his gut. "A'ight. If I'm gonna take on a student, I should reintroduce myself properly." "Student" may be a bit much, but the thought was there. Crossing his arms across his chest and nodding to himself as if he were agreeing with his own words before changing to a toothy grin and flashed a quick peace sign, the black skull on the end of the chain around his neck unearthed from it's hiding spot under the collar of his t-shirt. "Like I said when we all woke up: Th' name's Kenji Takabe. I've been taking first place in contests ever since I stepped onto a board, so they call me skateboarding's next great superstar." There weren't actually a lot of people calling him that, but he was allowed to embellish a bit here and there, shush. "Worst case scenario, we may only know each other for a couple of weeks before we check out; but for those few weeks let's get along and be friends, yeah?"Most people would probably be wary of the people they were trapped on a ship with and told they had to kill each other if they wanted off the ship instead of making friends with them, but Kenji, smiling so bright and innocent and seemingly so unaware of his circumstances instead picks up one of the airplanes he had already made that littered the deck. "As a show of good faith, I'll even give ya the first tip I ever learned."Penelope Baron[/ul]

" My name is Penelope Baron. Tattoos are sort of my thing. I do dabble in some other artforms like henna, but they never really interested me. There is something about tattoos being permanent that I love. Knowing someone is walking around with your design, its like they take a piece of you with them wherever they go. Ah, im rambling arent I?" This was great! Not only was she going to learn how to skate, but she made a friend as well! Penelope was so happy she did not even see her paper airplane circle round and hit hurt in the forehead. "oh!" She said quietly, rubbing her forehead. It was not as painful as some of the things that had happened so far to the other students, but it caught her by surprise! Plus it did sort of hurt... mostly her ego. It seemed that her surprise capture has been going good so far. She might even say she was having fun. She could just imagine going home and hanging out with her new friends. If they ever made it out. Her stomach brought her back to reality. Even if they are eventually rescued, someone could die of hunger. Someone could get murdered. No... she would not let that happen. She would find a way to save them, and her new friend, or die trying. Besides, there was still time before anyone was in any real trouble. "I'm ready to learn, teacher" she grinned at him. [I'm real sorry this took so long on my end. there was a situation I had to deal with on my end]
Teacher. Heh, the word sounded so strange to the ear it was hard to believe someone was saying it to someone like him, even in jest. Oh, if only his folks and their “can our son really be this dumb, how can he be a product of us” attitude could see him now. Sitting up straight so he was facing the purple haired girl who had introduced herself as Penelope, the ultimate tattoo artist, crossing his legs underneath him as he does so, only again can’t help himself but to fondle the black skull he wears around his neck on a chain
”First lesson I ever learned: before ya even think about steppin onto a board, ya gotta learn how ta cast away all yer fears.
A bit easier said than done, considering the situation they're in probably but as the blonde boy spoke, he can't help but bite the inside of his cheek as if he's keeping himself from saying something he'd regret later, instead turning back to the stack of unfolded papers that scattered the deck, nonchalantly picking one up and folding it into a crease
”My sister Chiaki used ta say if yer weighed down by troubles, you'll always sink like a stone rather than soar like a swan. So she's always told me whenever I was worried, to put all my fears into an airplane and throw them into the sky. Let the wind carry away all the negative feelings we're feeling and we'll fly high like we're weightless."
A stupid memory, maybe. An unrealistic fantasy about the situation they were in, there was no way their troubles would just evaporate by throwing them into the sky on paper airplanes, and yet somehow this belief comforted the skateboarder. It allowed him to believe that things could be okay if he forced himself to say they would. They had to be okay.
"We'll survive. We have to survive, don't we?"
Didn't they?

"Of course we will survive! I mean..." Penelope trailed off.
There was no sure fire guarantee that they would. There numbers have already dwindled by one. They were on the open seas. Even if the government was looking for them, it could take a long time for them to be found. They could die of starvation by then, or give in to the demented bears graduation policy. In fact, there was a very good chance neither of them would survive. Even so...
She turned to look at Kenji, "How else am I ever going to learn to skateboard?"
Penelope began her next paper airplane. If she was going to get off this ship and learn to skateboard, she should at least practice what she could while she was here. She imagined her greatest fears. She thought about being on this ship, something happening to her sister, and what might happen to her new friend. As she thought of these, she imagined putting them onto her airplane. The fears were no longer hers. Penelope didn't have to fear them anymore. She had the power to stop them.
Then she threw it. Unlike her previous attempts it didn't matter to her where it went. All that mattered is that it was no longer with her.
She spent the rest of the day making paper airplanes with Kenji by her side, Tossing their fears into the sky.
END.
